Final Blog

Well I guess this is it Net11 Blog- My very first Blog page. I learnt a lot and had fun. Hope to continue with another unit in the near future. Thanks for all my new web knowledge! Nat :)

Module 4 - Evaluating the Web

The reliability and authority of the site / source / article
No individual is named however the site says it is authorised by: Director, Centre for English Teaching. As this site is a reference/ informational site I would say that the content information is accurate and up to date (last update was on 20-Oct-2008)

The main ideas or subjects discussed in the article
* Who they are (about, mission)
* Programs they offer
* Dates for the programs
* Who their institution is associated with (Agents)
* The National ELICOS Associations they are involved with
* Enrolment procedures of taking an English test before enrolment

The purpose for which the site was written (this might include any apparent external interest, intellectual motivation or contextual information)
The purpose for the website was to increase their product awareness in the ELICOS industry, promote that they are a quality college and to increase their enrolments.
in terms of your own future use, which 'body ' of information (ie. the original 'snapshot' of the site, or your own, annotated, analytical version) would be most useful to refer back to?
As life can be quite chaotic I would prefer to look back on my annotation as it is a quick summary about the website. I don’t have to click on different pages to find the same information I had wrote in one or more paragraphs- less time consuming which is very important to me however as I obtained the information from the website it is still accurate.

In term of external users (i.e. if you included this site as a hyperlink or resource on a website) which body of information would best help them judge if the site was useful or of interest to them?
I would use this link which takes the viewer straight to the English College products which is their courses and programs. The viewer will then be able to quickly decide if the site is what they are looking for.

Module 4 - Organising Search Information Task

· URL. www.monash.edu/englishcentre/
· author, Maintained by mcmast@mcpl.monash.edu.au
· institution, Monash University
· blurb/ summary / screen shot (this can be a direct copy of an appropriate abstract or introductory paragraph on the site: but make sure you record and reference it as such) "Monash University English Language Centre Home International Home Australian Government Requirements for International students Monash College Pty" (Google search result)

· URL. www.usyd.edu/cet/students/support.shtml
· author, Authorised by: Director, Centre for English Teaching.
· institution, Milton College- The University of Sydney
· blurb/ summary / screen shot (this can be a direct copy of an appropriate abstract or introductory paragraph on the site: but make sure you record and reference it as such) University Home · Centre for English Teaching; Contacts; Library; Sitemap ... His previous experience includes working at UWS College, Milton College and (Google search result)

· URL. www.uws.edu.au/international
· author, University of Western Sydney 2008- no individual mentioned
· institution, UWS College- University of Western Sydney
· blurb/ summary / screen shot (this can be a direct copy of an appropriate abstract or introductory paragraph on the site: but make sure you record and reference it as such) "UWS College is a wholly owned entity of UWS, offering preparation pathway courses through English and Academic Programs. More Information ...(Google search result)

To save my most usable searches I went to File/backup/restore/back up all searches and tracking items but I had to also download Copernic Personal to do this.

Module 4 - Boolean searching task

I used the "and", "or" searching technique on Copernic however a little box came up saying "You do not have to use Boolean operators as (and, or) since Corpernic Agent automatically manages them"

So I used it on Google.com and found:
· the biggest number of hits relating to these key words
English and College shows 279,000,000 results
English or College shows 280,000,000 results

· information most relevant to what you ACTUALLY wanted to look for!
Use more key words to refine search like city, country etc

· information coming only from university sources
I used the advanced search tool and put "edu" in the "Search within a site or domain" box and search English and College and University

Back to Module 4 - Searching the Web- Search Engine Task

Choose your most commonly used internet search engine and do a search with words of your choosing.

No surprises here, I used Google for my commonly used search engine. The first hit for word "English College " and the first site was www.northsydneycollege.com.au/ out of about 65,000,000 results

First 5 results were:
www.northsydneycollege.com.au/
www.uec.edu.au/
www.ace.edu.au/
www.englishaustralia.com.au
www.collegeofenglish.com.au/

Using Copernicus or similar, set it up to search at least three search engines (including one that will search the 'deep web') and repeat exactly the same searchRecord the number of hits in your learning log, and compare to your first search. What differences did you notice? Why? Which search, on first glance gave you the most promising results?

First five results were:
1. http://www.StudyGroup.com/USACollege/
2. http://www.RosettaStone.com/
3. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_College,_Douai
4. http://www.englishcollegenoosa.com/
5. http://www.ncte.org/journals/ce

The search enabled 11 search engines however I didn't receive as many results as Google- 51 results in total. At first glance I thought Google gave me more promising results as there were more of them however as you go through the list of the Google results (further into the search like page 4 and on) compared to the results on Copernic the results don't have as much relevance as the results in Copernic.

Module 3 - Legal Issues

· have you used images or words on your web page or website that contravene copyright laws?

On my webpage I don’t have photos which can be subject to copyright laws as they are my personal photos however I did use the little picture man that was used in the tutorial. There is no copyright sign noted near to picture to indicate to me it has been copyrighted however as it is an intellectual creation by someone other than me, it’s a good idea to attribute it was their creation and not my own.

· Would you be in breach of copyright if you put the Curtin logo at the top of your web page for an assignment?

This information may be difficult to find so be prepared for a search and some independent thought!

You’re right, I didn’t find an answer on any website however the common answer I was finding in relation to logo use was that if I had permission to use it from the owner (Curtin University) than it should be fine to use it. If an assignment created and distributed by Curtin University asked me to place their logo a website I created it should be fine. I would add to this by saying that the website I create must also be inline with their requests. I can not just put their logo on any site which has nothing to do with the assignment.

Module 4 - Downloading tools / plug-ins Task

In your learning log record which programs you downloaded and note which (if any) facets you think might prove useful.

1. Adobe pdf's Reader- very useful with documents you send that you don't want altered E.G. legal documents, receipts etc
2. Windows Media Player- You can view and play movie and audio files in the same place, works with MP3 players (Toshiba Gigabeat)
3. Copernic- Different programs which you can add on such as the Personal component that allows you to save your searches to your desktop/ hard drive.
