My Top five tips for New Bloggers

Let's get straight into it:

Visual- People like looking at interesting images so why not add to your blogg by adding one picture which would sum up what you are saying or intrigue someone to read what you have to say. Flickr and iStockphotos have some great photos however you may need to pay to use them so Wikipedia images (from my understanding) is free of royalties so you may want to have a little look or get creative and use some of your own.

Heading- Sometimes people try and get too creative with their slogans, taglines and I would say the same for headings. As this would be the first thing your readers would read before deciding to continue I would suggest making it clear and to the point.

Audience- I know a lot of people are technology savvy and can understand the new terms and jargon of the Internet however many also aren't (needless to say I am one) so by adding a link or definition will help those like me understand what you are talking about and in turn expand your range of auidence.

Layout- As your viewers would be looking at a computer screen and can strain the eyes I would suggest using a lot of spacing so it is easier to read and follow.

Topic- Stay on one topic. Try not to get off track and start new points in the same post. It may confuse or even bore your reader so if you would like to make a different point make a new post.

The list wasn't written in order of importance but to create an acronym which will help remember my tips better- VHALT- I hope they help :)

Hey Nat, cool tips. Like your idea about visual. A pic tells a thousand words. I'd add to your tips to read lots of blogs and comment on lots of blogs. Reading and writing help your own writing and gets the blogger into the conversation. Let's not stand at the back of the bar watching all the fun. Let's join in! I'm looking forward to your posts.

Hi Natalie,
good blog, I also like your tips. Its easy to forget that we are trying to communicate our ideas in competition with every other blogger. We need to make our own blog something that others will read or comment on.

Hey Nat, great tips, especially the tip about being visual. The image in your first post and the formatting really give you blog that pro look. Other than Flickr, you can also get images from Photobucket, Picasa and a bunch of others. Well done!

Thanks for your tips Nat,

One comment I'd like to add is in response to your tips on using images.

Make sure you don't breach copyright. You can easily do this by using the Creative Commons feature on Flickr. If you purchase your images from Istockphoto you should be OK, but you can't go and take peoples images from flickr or somewhere else if they don't want you to. Now linking to them, well that is another matter entirely.

I look forward to reading further posts down the track!
