Module 1 - File Transfer Protocol (FTP)

The word of the hour is CAPITALIZATION matters. The task was easy enough, the most time consuming thing was finding the file. If there was a quick search tool- that would make it so much easier!

It's very convenient to be able to access files like this and good to know that on most FTP transfers you need passwords to access them. I wouldn't run an FTP demon or an anonymous FTP as they can be used without having an account and paswords to exchange files.

Task B- Blinkin Lights

To the creators of Blinkenlights that was awesome! I'm not a big starwars fan however I loved the creativity behind each picture. I guess I was was wrong in my previous post, Telnet can be used for more than just a resources tool.

Blinkin Lights reminds me of the early sms picture messages you use to receive on the old nokia 5110's etc. They weren't pictures but a collection of numbers, letters and symbols to make a picture and because of this the pictures were very basic with limitations to how realistic they could be, how the pictures could move and how much information could go into the message space and standard size of the numbers, letters and symbols.

SKIPPY :)

I would say this would be the same for Telnet- working with many movement and creative limitations as Telnet receives and transmits unencrypted ASCII characters (plain text) across a network (Microsofttechnet).

Task A - Telnet

This post was a long time coming however intially i was having problems with the Telnet application...or so I thought I was.

Firstly because i'm using Windows Vista and have never used Telnet before i read up on the "Help and How to" section and downloaded telnet form here. It looked great and I was very proud to have successfully downloaded it however when i typed in "library.deakin.edu.au." this message showed:

Welcome to Microsoft Telnet ClientEscape Character is 'CTRL+]'Microsoft Telnet> library.deakin.edu.auInvalid Command. type ?/help for helpMicrosoft Telnet>

I couldn't work it out - i typed it exactly how it was written in the cirriculum page so i was unsure how my command was wrong. So after a while of searching the Internet to find my answer i asked my fellow Net11 students and thanks Hans you had what i needed. I left the "o" from the beginning of the command.

I have been MIA for a while due to problems with my internet connection so I also wanted to say thanks to everyone else who replied to my post; Lindsay, Cynthia and Monique.

As this was my first experience my intial thoughts were that it is a very basic way to gain information from other databases around the world. Once I got over my initial problem and I was in the Deakin library I was surprised at how fast and easy it was to use. It is a very straight forward way of collecting information so for searching for resources in a database- it was perfect to use.
